What is Natural Farming?
Natural Farming is a chemical-free, ecological, and traditional farming system that relies on locally available resources such as cow dung, cow urine, jaggery, neem leaves, and crop residues to cultivate crops. Unlike modern conventional farming that depends heavily on synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, natural farming works in harmony with nature by:
Enhancing soil fertility naturally
Increasing farm biodiversity
Enhancing soil fertility naturally
Producing safe, nutritious, chemical-free food
Reducing input costs significantly
Building climate resilience
The Philosophy Behind Natural Farming
Natural Farming is based on the philosophy of Do Nothing farming proposed by Masanobu Fukuoka and further adapted to Indian conditions by Subhash Palekar, who coined the term Zero Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF).
No Chemical Fertilizers
Use of organic inputs only
No Weeding
Ground cover maintains moisture
No Pesticides
Natural pest management through bio-preparations
Microbial Enrichment
Enhancing beneficial soil organisms
No Tilling (Minimal disturbance)
Preserving soil structure
Local Resource Use
Self-sufficiency through on-farm inputs
Frequently Asked Question (FAQs)
Yes, natural farming can be practiced for all major crops including cotton, soybean, wheat, maize, pulses, vegetables, and spices. The techniques may vary slightly based on crop requirements.
The transition period is typically 2-3 years. During this time, soil health improves, beneficial organisms increase, and the farm ecosystem stabilizes. Some farmers see positive results in the first season itself.
Initially (first 1-2 seasons), yields may be 10-20% lower as the soil adjusts. However, by the 3rd season, yields typically match or exceed chemical farming levels, with significantly lower costs and premium pricing.
Natural farming uses bio-pesticides like Brahmastra, Neemastra, and Agneyastra, which are highly effective. Additionally, intercropping, beneficial insects, and healthy soil create natural pest resistance.
Yes, we support farmers in obtaining PGS-India (Participatory Guarantee System) certification, which is recognized for domestic organic markets. For export, we facilitate third-party organic certification.
Training is free for UNFPCL member farmers. Non-members can attend at nominal costs. We also provide free educational materials and ongoing field support.
UNFPCL provides market linkages through:
- Direct bulk buyers paying premium prices
- Organic retail chains
- Export markets (with certification)
- Online platforms (ONDC, Amazon, Flipkart)
- Local organic stores and health food outlets
- Free training and capacity building
- Subsidized bio-inputs
- Technical field support
- Model farm demonstrations
- Market linkage assistance
- Certification support
